An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
